Blood Flow Restriction Rehabilitation (BFR)
The brief and intermittent occlusion of venous (veins) blood flow using a tourniquet while exercising.
Allows an individual, who is not be able to tolerate high intensity exercise, to get a similar physiologic response to their tissues
increased muscle strength
hypertrophy of the muscle
Blood flow restriction rehabilitation is indicated for anyone who has suffered an injury, underwent a surgery or who may be suffering from an arthritic joint and are unable to tolerate lifting high loads for strength gains.
Is it safe?
The Physical Therapist’s at Waldron’s Peak -Sirona Physical Therapy will utilize a specialized tourniquet system with built in monitor to ensure the blood flow is reduced just enough to create positive changes.
The amount of pressure to limit the optimal amount of blood flow varies between individuals. The size of your limb, density of soft tissue in your limb, blood pressure, placement of the tourniquet cuff and width of the tourniquet cuff must be take into account when determining your personalized pressure.
Following an exercise session where you have built up sufficient lactate there will be:
· An increase in growth hormone and anabolic (positive) muscle growth factors
· An increase in muscle protein synthesis (muscles ability to grow)
